The LA times offered an article recently describing Iran’s method for supplying the kidneys required for transplants. Iran’s approach is quite different than the approach in the U.S. where it is illegal to buy or sell human organs. See pages 147 and 148 of our textbook for more on this topic.
For this discussion topic, first read the linked article above and pages 147-148 of the book and respond to the following questions:
1. Which scenario (either creating a market in which kidneys can be bought/sold vs. the status quo where kidneys can only be donated for altruistic reasons) do you expect will result in more lives saved? Why?
2. What sort of unexpected consequences would you predict if the U.S. allowed human organs to be bought/sold as in Iran?
3. Which scenario do you prefer? Explain.
