In that case, watch A Class Divided https://www.youtube.com/… (language warning: you will hear racial groups referred to in ways that are not acceptable, including the use of the N-word–be sure that you do not use those terms in your reflection) and write a 2-3 page paper reflecting on the experiment.

Be sure to include your overall reflection/impression/thoughts/feelings/etc., and also your responses to ALL of the following questions.

1. Why do you think the students (for the most part) went along with her experiment?

2. Do you have experience as part of an in-group or an out-group? This may include race, but also other aspects of your identity. How do you feel in each case? Can you empathize with the students who performed more poorly in phonics during their time in the ‘out-group’?

3. In the film, Jane Elliott decided that eye color differences mattered. In real life, who decides which differences matter? How do they make sure the rest of society falls in line and acts accordingly?

4. What lesson did Jane Elliott want her students to learn, and do you think the experiment was effective in teaching that lesson?

5. Eye color differences are not assigned value in our society, but other differences are. What differences do we assign meaning/value to in our society, and how does that impact people?
