Purpose

Choose a grimm fairy tale and conduct a Jungian analysis of it. Use the original text or film of the fairy tale, not a modern interpretation or retelling. Your analysis should reflect a clear understanding of all five steps of a Jungian analysis and enable you to identify key archetypes in the selected story.

Suggestions

The suggested page length for this analysis is three pages.

Refer to Chapter 35 of your textbook to familiarize yourself with the five steps of a Jungian analysis.

Do not consult online sources to assist with your analysis. This analysis is your opportunity to apply the steps of a Jungian analysis independently.

Structure

Use the following framework to structure your analysis:

  1. Step 1: Determine whose “dream” it is
  2. Step 2: Assign the archetypes
  3. Step 3: Break the story into stages or episodes
  4. Step 4: Characterize the episodes to determine the pattern and meaning of them
  5. Step 5: Retell the story in terms of Jungian archetypes, summarizing the overall meaning of the story and its archetypes
