Judith in The Tent of Holofernes and Force of Nature Discussion

Prompt

Drawing from concrete examples of two artworks from different artists, periods, and media, discuss how art invites participation and to what ends (i.e. the aspects of art that appeal to the viewer/reader/listener/performer and elicit specific kinds of engagement).

Purpose

To synthesize information from the course in demonstration of one’s ability to think about connections you’ve discovered between disparate artworks and the roles art plays in human cultures.

Instructions

Discuss two works, from two different periods, in two different forms. For example, you might write about a section of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Sir Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Gate.”

Include at least two instances of specialized terminology as appropriate to discuss any insights you’ve come to and/or any questions you still have regarding the function of art. To build on my example above, I might discuss line and texture in sculpture alongside melody and texture in music to discuss how participants are encouraged to enter into the artwork emotionally, and then I’d refer to concrete details from each work to illustrate my meaning. Or, I might refer to those same elements as the creation of distance between the work and its audience and then, referring to concrete details from the work, raise questions about the limits of art to communicate clearly any one idea or solicitation of action.
