Weekly Objectives 1, 2, 3, and 4 will be addressed in this discussion.
In order to post to this forum, complete Week 5 readings and presentations. This forum provides an opportunity to discuss how each of us is responsible for advancing nursing discipline, profession, and science and what we can do towards that aim.
This discussion “Advancing the Nursing Discipline, Profession, and Science” is an opportunity to summarize and synthesize what you’ve learned during the last 5 weeks about nursing knowledge, the nursing metaparadigm, concepts, models, frameworks, and theories and their application to nursing practice.
Instructions:
Now that you’ve nearly completed the course, let’s revisit the week 1 discussion topic. You were asked to formulate a position on nursing as a discipline, profession, and science. Describe your position now; has it changed? Are all RNs responsible for advancing the nursing discipline, profession, and science? What are our responsibilities as a collective discipline and profession and as individuals? What is evidence-based practice (EBP) and how does it fit with theory-driven practice?
One way to contribute as a baccalaureate-prepared nurse is to use a nursing conceptual framework to guide clinical practice. Another way to contribute is by being active and/or belonging to professional nursing organization(s). What else can you do to advance the nursing discipline, profession, and science? Include your reference(s) in both your initial post and your reply posts. You should include the following:
- Re-visit the Week 1 discussion. Have your positions on or understanding of the nursing discipline, profession, and science changed? If so, how?
- Identify and discuss the responsibilities of RNs in terms of contributing to and advancing the nursing discipline, profession, and science.
- One way to contribute to and advance nursing is to apply a nursing conceptual framework to your clinical practice. Explain how this advances the nursing discipline.
- Identify any professional nursing organizations you are active in and/or maintain membership in. If you currently have no memberships, what are some that interest you? Can you commit to joining one of these in the next few weeks? What does belonging to a professional nursing organization have to do with advancing nursing?
- EBP is a significant part of PNW’s baccalaureate curriculum, and our College of Nursing is highly involved with the Joanna Briggs Institute. As you proceed in this program you will learn about various processes involved in developing your evidence-based practice. As such, becoming familiar with key terms now is critical to your understanding of these processes. Identify what a “PICO” question is, what is meant by “levels of evidence,” and what “Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)” is, and any other related terms that may feel new to you. Reference the Week 5 assigned readings (e.g., Hopp & Rittenmeyer, 2021, etc.) and explore content on the following site to support how EBP relates to the discussion topic of advancing nursing: Indiana Center for Evidence Based Nursing Practice
- Are there any other ways you can advance the nursing discipline, profession, and science?
- Present your posts and replies in a professional, scholarly manner, including scholarly references, as appropriate.
