IT 490 GRCC Week 1 Securing Virtual Networks and Hosts Discussion

Explain the following in your own words.  Ensure that all components below are addressed in your discussion post and that you respond to another person’s post with more than ‘sounds good’.  You will want to consider their response and analyze it.

You are the system administrator for company ABC.  Your datacenter consists of multiple VMWare hosts for virtual workstations and servers. Your VMWare hosts are: VMWareHost1 (192.168.1.2) & VMWareHost2 (192.168.1.3).  Your Cisco router is at 192.168.1.1/24.  VM hosts on VMWareHost1 are: FS1 (192.168.2.2/24), APP1 (192.168.2.3/24), COMM1 (192.168.2.4/24) and MANU1 (192.168.2.5/24).  VM hosts on VMWareHost2 are: WRKSTA1 (192.168.3.2/24), WRKSTA2 (192.168.3.3/24), PAY1 (192.168.3.4/24) and OPT1 (192.168.3.5/24).  VMWareHost1 & VMWareHost2 are connected to VMSwitch1 (192.168.1.254/24) which is further connected to your Cisco router 192.168.1.1/24 on eth0/0 and ser0/0 is connected to your ISP (Comcast) and has an IP address of 96.110.27.193/29 with a gateway of 96.110.27.198/29.

a.  Analyze your public network.  How many usable public IP addresses do you have?  Are there unused public IP addresses assigned to your business?  Should you monitor unused public IP addresses assigned to your business?  How would you do this?

b.  How would you go about securing (hardening) your VMWare host servers?  What software would you use and on what machine would you install it to monitor the VMWare host servers?

c.  Is there commercial antivirus/antispam software that you would use and if so, which one?  Why did you choose it?
