College Registration System

For the semester project teams will develop and create a functioning Access Database using Microsoft Access. Students will be creating a database for a College Registration System. A registration management system is vital for any college and will impact the way schools operate.

Background Scenario

  • You have just joined the I.T. team for an institution of higher education and are charged with designing and rolling out a new registration system for the institution.
  • Assume the institution has an old system and you will be completely replacing it with the new one.
  • You will act as the project manager, the analyst, and the developer for this project.
  • The database system is to be used by school employees. Students will use a website dashboard to register for courses.

Note:

A college contains many departments. Each department can offer any number of courses. Many instructors can work in a department, but an instructor can work only in one department. For each department, there is a head, and an instructor can be head of only one department. Each instructor can take any number of courses, and a course can be taken by only one instructor. A student can enroll for any number of courses and each course can have any number of students.

Project Deliverables

You will design, develop, and create the following deliverables for this project, and use necessary software introduced in the course. Please develop the Project Deliverables noted below into one Microsoft Word document that includes a table of contents. The completed document will be upload into Moodle. You can add objects into Word to attach files to open for grading.

Using your own personal knowledge of registering for college, create the following:

Part 1: Design Tools

  1. A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for the database based on the SDLC phases that details the tasks needed for the database project.
  2. Select a Project Development Methodology to develop the database and provide a description of why you would select this approach in detail for this development.
  3. A description of three actors (minimum) that will use the system, more can be introduced as needed.
  4. A questionnaire for each actor to learn more about how the system is currently used and to gather information for elicitation requirements to help build a new system.
  5. One complete Use Case Diagram for each of the actors. Each diagram should show how that user will interact with the system.
  6. Create a Context Diagram and a Level 0 Data Flow Diagram for the system.
  7. Create an Entity Relationship Diagram that describes the database structure and relationship of the database.
  8. Create at least two user (training) documentation on the use of the access database system.e.g. adding new students, running a query, or looking up users.
  9. Create a Mock-Up of the Student interface for registering for courses.

Part 2: The Registration System

Deliver a functioning database using Microsoft Access.

  1. Create the necessary Tables to build the relational database. Tables should have integrity via joins (relationships) between them.
  2. Enter “dummy” data for your Tables
  3. Create a Form to enter, update, delete user data from the Tables.
  4. Create a Report to show class rosters (minimum three classes)
  5. Create a Query that shows only female students

Due:

  • Upload the following completed files by the due date indicated in the syllabus.
    • Upload only one Word file that contains all the above. The document should be professional organized and written with file objects added as needed. Document should also include a cover page, table of contents, and work cited pages.
    • Upload the Access Database file. Be sure to check your submission to ensure the right file was submitted for grading.
  • No extensions will be given. Upload what you have even if not completed.

Clarification and Assistance:

It is up to the student to contact the professor for clarification on any of the above deliverables. Please allow 24 hours for a response. Do not wait until the last week or day to seek assistance or clarification, as response time and deadline pressures may impact your final grade.

Note : Need Part # 1 for now.
