Scenario
In
addition to attending culinary school part-time, Tyler is a prep cook for a local
casual dining restaurant. The money he makes at his job allows him to share an
apartment with another culinary student. When Tyler isn’t working, he is likely
to be at school or hanging out at his apartment. He has a girlfriend, but not a
lot of time or money to use for going out. Needless to say, Tyler enjoys
cooking but doesn’t find much time for it at home. During the day, Tyler takes
some classes, then works five afternoons/evenings each week, including most
weekends. Tyler’s usual diet is as follows:
Breakfast: At most a granola bar; he usually
skips breakfast but does drink coffee. Lunch: Tyler usually eats in the school’s
dining services. His favorite lunches are quarter-pound cheeseburgers or crispy
chicken sandwiches with onion rings. He usually drinks Mountain Dew.Dinner: When at work, Tyler eats whatever is
offered for the staff meal, which is often a pasta dish, but sometimes it is
roast chicken or meatloaf. He also makes himself a tossed green salad with
dressing. Snacks: Tyler likes to eat cookies, ice
cream, bananas, and pretzels.
Activity
Discuss
three factors that likely influence what Tyler eats. Do
the factors you listed in question 1 also affect what you choose to eat?
Explain why or why not. How
does Tyler’s diet compare to the typical American diet that is low in
vegetables, fruits, beans and peas, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat milk and
milk products, lean meats and poultry, seafood, nuts, and seeds? How
does Tyler’s diet compare to your diet?
First, describe what you typically eat in one day. Name
one food that Tyler eats that is high in both fat and protein and another food
that is high in carbohydrates. Do
you think that Tyler’s diet is adequate—meaning that is provides enough Kilo calories
and nutrients to keep him healthy?
Explain why or why not.
