Chapter 7 Assignment
Is the Great Green Wall the Solution?
Background: Many of sub-Saharan Africa’s people are profoundly poor. In addition, soils are not well suited for agriculture, water is scarce, and there are pockets of very high population density. However, Africa hosts a unique and priceless complex of plant and animal species that is in need of preservation and protection. If conditions for humans worsen, so will the conditions for plants and animals; thus, strategies need to be designed that both provide for basic human needs and address environmental issues.
Instructions: On the Internet, research Africa’s “Great Green Wall,” which is planned to stop the spreading of the Sahara, and possibly (more recently suggested) terrorism. Answer the following questions:
- What are the goals and strategies of this project?
- How are these strategies also providing for human needs?
- Describe the balance between the program’s policies on human needs, and on plant and animal conservation.
- Some would argue that the solutions to Africa’s environmental problems lie less in high-tech solutions than in rediscovering traditional ideas about conservation and sustainability. Is there evidence of this in the Great Green Wall project?
