Assignment—Communication Technology

Each of us has our own way of dealing with conflict. However, our Conflict Negotiation Style (pdf)might not be the most effective method of resolving a problem. This assignment asks you to describe the verbal communication and nonverbal communication for each conflict negotiation style – accommodation, avoidance, collaboration, competition, and compromise.

Imagine the following situation with YOU as the employee:

You were expecting a raise at work, but then you learned that a coworker who has less time on the job than you received a raise, and you did not. (Note: In this case the conflict is with your boss, not the other employee…it’s not their fault that they received the raise and you didn’t.) 

Provide descriptions of yourverbal communication AND nonverbal communication, and then answer the remaining questions about your real-life conflict situations

Describe the meeting with your boss if you approached her/him using the Accommodation Style of Conflict Negotiation. Describe the meeting with your boss if you approached him/her using the Avoidance Style of Conflict Negotiation. Describe the meeting with your boss if you approached her/him using the Collaboration Style of Conflict Negotiation. Describe the meeting with your boss if you approached him/her using the Competition Style of Conflict Negotiation. Describe the meeting with your boss if you approached her/him using the Compromise Style of Conflict Negotiation. Which of the five Conflict Negotiation Styles do you think would resolve the conflict most effectively? Which of the five Conflict Negotiation Styles do you normally use in conflict situations? Which Conflict Negotiation Style do you think you’ll use in your next conflict situation?
