The research paper provides an opportunity for you to pursue, in depth, a topic of interest to you that is relevant to the course. The topic of the paper is flexible, but must be based on research. It is designed to help you think critically and analytically about a topic. You are to think about and analyze your topic offering evidence from your sources. You must have a discernible thesis statement. Remember, all papers, to some extent, are about making an argument and supporting it. Your thesis statement must make that argument explicit. All papers must be word-processed, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 12 point type, MLA format with documentation of sources. Papers should be between 900 to 1200 words.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a serious offense and will not be tolerated. A student caught using the work of another as their own will receive an “F” on the paper and may receive an “F” for the course. To avoid plagiarism, make sure you properly acknowledge your use of another’s work in your papers. This includes any material you select from any source. When you directly quote such material, you must set it in quotation marks with the proper MLA citation. If you use your own words to paraphrase from a source, you also need to acknowledge the source of that information with a proper MLA citation. If you have difficulties or questions concerning sources and their proper citation, please refer to the recommended texts for research papers listed below, or see your instructor.

Sources
You must use at least six outside sources, ALL of which must appear in a properly-formatted Works Cited page. Any work that appears in a list of works cited must be cited within the text itself. (That means there should be at least six different in-text citations.) Only TWO of the sources may be Internet-based. This restriction does not apply to database articles, even though, technically speaking, they are accessed using the Internet. At least ONE source must be a print source from the NVCC library.
Sources from the Internet
- Each source must be by an author whose name and credentials are identifiable.
- Each source must be a text that has actually been published in print. It may be a book, journal, article, magazine article, newspaper article, etc.
- You may access these printed materials published elsewhere using the Internet.
- You should carefully screen all Internet sources for credibility.
