UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
Faculty of Arts & Science
MIDTERM ASSESSMENT – SPRING/SUMMER 2020
POL 340Y1 – INTERNATIONAL LAW
Duration: 72 Hours (Take Home)
Exam Instructions:
 This exam has TWO questions. You must answer all the questions on this exam.
 You are free to consult your class notes, the textbook, course materials, your own
research, or any other written (including on-line) materials.
 The usual rules of citation apply. You must cite to the textbook, cases, treaties or other
appropriate authorities. You may choose how to cite material, though you must use an
in-text citation (i.e., Akehurst, International Law, p. _”).
 I do not expect you to be familiar with caselaw/treaties not covered in the textbook or
course materials. However, please feel free to research and cite other materials if you
have time. No one will be graded down for not doing so, but I promise to be impressed if
you find relevant and persuasive authorities that we have not covered. That said, you
have the materials necessary to earn a top mark without external research.
 Please do not quote extensively from caselaw, treaties, or the textbook. You should only
quote material that really adds to your analysis or where your answer turns on the
precise terms used by the relevant authority (treaty/case/scholars etc). Accurate and
appropriate citations will spare you the need for extensive quoting.
 What I am most interested in is the reasoning process you use to answer each question.
Simply stating a conclusion will not suffice. You must develop the analysis/argument for
each response.
 I will be available by email to address questions you may have. I will not answer inquiries
that bear on the content to include in your responses. If I decide to respond to your
question, I will circulate an announcement to the entire class with the question and my
response.
 This document contains the questions. However, please make sure to download the
template for the exam and use the template in preparing your responses.
 Please feel free to use appropriate headings and subheadings where doing so adds to
the clarity of your answer.
 Your answers (based on the template) must be uploaded through Quercus. You may
upload a Microsoft Word document or a PDF.
 You must complete (digitally) the affirmation included at the end of the exam template.
 You MUST submit your responses through Quercus by no later than 9am on June 27,

  1. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
    Exam Format and Grading Scheme:
     Question 1 – (40 marks) [Maximum of 1,000 words]
     Question 2 – (60 marks) [Maximum of 1,200 words TOTAL]
