Assignment Overview
Conduct research on the assigned country with major natural disasters that have occurred in the past 5 years—one international and one having taken place in the United States. See assigned sites. Research each disaster and the effects on the particular region (overseas and states). Begin by answering the following questions about the selected disasters:
- Name the location, date, and type of each of your selected disasters.
- How many people did each disaster displace?
- Discuss any similarities or differences in the disasters. (overseas and US State)
- Discuss the types of responses or support that each disaster received. For example, was there global, national, regional, or local support? If so, in what kind was it?
- Was there a mass migration of the displaced population due to the disasters? If so, where did people move to in each case? ex. New Orleans to Georgia.
- What types of emergency shelters were used to house displaced people in each of the disasters?
- Did the type of response or support differ between the international and US disasters?
- Did you find evidence of any cultural implications in the support response in either of the disasters?
- Assess the success of rebuilding efforts that took place after each of the disasters you selected.
- Review the country and US state assigned to you.
Based on your research and answers to the above questions, write 500-word essay discussing your observations on population displacement due to natural disasters. Along with your essay, include at least six sketches illustrating the types of emergency shelters that you have researched. Include a list of MLA-formatted citations for your research. Review the MLA Guidelines.
Case Studies:
Provide two case studies with complete information on design, size, structure of room/windows/doors, materials, capacity, sources of water and electricity, foundation and floor, ceiling, etc. Identify architects, builders, and funding sources. Case study should be disaster related – one for overseas and one US state.
Research: All research activities will mainly use Ai Online Library Resources, and minimal use of reputable websites. Works (text and images will only use proper MLA citation. Every research submission will be qualified on research analysis and synthesis, and pragmatic application to design.
Each formatted paper will be outlined in five parts: 1 Contextual Facts, 2 Response to specific questions, 3 Projected design application, 4 Image research that is identified and cited properly, and 5 Complete citations. Use 11 x 17 inches in the landscape form
