Step 1: Research Three Regions with Gender Inequality Issues

Research three countries from each given region that struggle with gender inequality. See W9 selected regions. To achieve a full spectrum or regions and countries; choose at least one NEW region from Asia, one NEW from Latin America, and one NEW from Africa or Europe. Choose other countries that you have not researched at all from weeks 1 to 8 projects. (Example: Myanmar in Asia, Nicaragua from Latin America, and Mauritania in Africa).

Note: For RP5 – the countries are your personal choice. You are free to choose from several countries in Asia / Latin America / Africa / Europe. US and UK will not be allowed for this project. Be prepared to have a rationale why you chose the countries.

Consolidate your findings from the countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa or Europe. Identify your three selected countries and then discuss any specific gender inequality issues, items of commonalities, or differences that you find among these countries. For each of the three countries, address again the following:

  • What are the major religious or cultural issues that affect women or children in that region?
  • What is the climate and topography like in that region that may impact built environments and way of life? (ex. planting seasons affect the lives of women, poverty affects the education of children).
  • Is there a common vernacular architectural style or materials for the region that affect the creation of rooms for women and children? (ex. concepts of separation or communal living).
  • Does the region have access to clean drinking water and sanitation?
  • What are the prominent gender-related issues of that country or region? For example, are there any crimes and violence against women or children? Is access to food, shelter, education, or healthcare highly differentiated among people in the community? Why?

Research each of these countries and create a list of notes for your answers to the questions above for each of them. Create a chart or table to identify commonalities and differences. Include a list of MLA-formatted citations for your research. Review the MLA Guidelines.

Step 2: Create Gender Inequality Essay and Sketches

Select one NEW region from the three you researched in Step 1. Complete further research for the purpose of creating any option below:

  • Option 1 – Slumlifting : Culture-specific Girls’ School (Target – Elementary School)
  • Option 2 – Development Workshop : Prevention Training Facility (Target – Young and Older Adults)
  • Option 3 – Green Recovery : Beyond Shelter for Orphanage (Target – Elementary and Middle School)
  • Option 4 – Building for Peace : Refugee Learning Center (Target – Young and Older Adults)

After selecting your option, review any given examples discussed in this week’s online lectures. Look for two case studies in any country that can be replicated or inspire your developing concept. Try doing an Internet search on your topic, for example, “designing schools for girls/women in (enter your selected global region).” Include any specific design ideas or criteria from the case study in your essay and discuss whether your design will include those same features.

Complete the research on your selected region’s history, traditions, beliefs, and vernacular architecture. Research the type of facility you would like to design from the four options above, and include critical spaces that would be required for that type of space. Your modular space should be within 1000 – 1200 sq feet. You need to have 4 that will fit in an open area to be provided later.

Based on your earlier research, write a (500-word) essay discussing your observations on how a particular region’s culture, architecture, or location can impact the design of your selected type of facility. Discuss what types of services or spaces you would include in your facility. Along with your essay, include at least 7-8 sketches illustrating conceptual designs for your facility, showing cultural and architectural elements from your selected country.
