COMM 331 – Final Paper Assignment; Judge a Debate (100 points)

The goal of this final paper assignment is to take the concepts, processes, and ideas that we’ve discussed throughout the semester and apply them to a specific scenario of argumentation. To that end, you will select a debate from Intelligence Squared (http://intelligencesquaredus.org/)

Watch the entire debate at least once (you may find it helpful to watch the debate more than once and take notes on the relative arguments). Then write a 2000-2500 word essay in which you identify and summarize the main arguments in the debate, render a decision as to the winner, and explain/defend your decision. In other words, summarize the positions of each participant, the arguments made, the strategies used to make and support the arguments, and the responses they give to each other. You do not need to restate the entire debate or every single point made, but you should include major arguments that each side makes.

Once you have summarized the main points of contention in the debate, render a decision on the outcome of the debate. Note not only who won the debate from your perspective but why you believe they won the debate as well. Be as specific as you can, but be thorough as well. Show your work. Explain how you arrive at the decision you do, citing specific arguments from both sides in the debate. Identify the clash of arguments (or lack thereof) to show the reasons for your decision. Outside research is not required for this assignment, but if you do consult outside information (anything not part of the debate you evaluate), you MUST cite it
