Purpose:
The purpose of this exercise is to give you practice at identifying interesting and research-worthy communication topics in an example news or human interest story.
Procedure:
Read the New York Times article attached. The PDF of the article is titled News Story for Communication Concepts in the News Exercise (Instagram).
Read the story very carefully. Then, list as many topics as you can related to communication in the news story. Start broadly and think about the contexts of communication. Does the story have anything to do with general areas of communication, such as interpersonal, intergroup, media, or mass communication? Or, does the story touch upon general topics of communication, such as persuasion, deception, marketing, family/relational communication, or social media?
You should also think more narrowly. For example, what specific topics are discussed? This could include such topics as self-disclosure, conflict resolution, media role models, or selective attention. For any topic, concept, or theory you find, briefly discuss how you see it as relevant to the events, people, or actions described in the news story.
Approximate length is 1 page double-spaced, with 12-point Times New Roman font.
