Inside the Teenage Brain: Review Questions
Most information is in the video, but pull from the other materials as well in answering the following:
- What do toddlers and teens have in common?
- Explain the “risk-taking paradox” of teens. What’s happening in teen brains that leads them to take risks?
- What, besides hormonal surges, causes teen mood swings?
- What helps explain miscommunication between teens and adults (ex. The McLean hospital study – reading emotions)?
- What is the cerebellum and what critical role does it play in adolescent development?
- Explain the “use it or lose’ principle in relation to brain development.
- Explain “cognitive flexibility”
- What is the optimal amount of sleep a teenager need? How much sleep does the average teen get?
- Zoom in on the studies done with Charlie and Nicole – how much did they improve on the ball and cup task? How about the mirror task? Explain why Nicole performed better on both tests.
- Name three benefits of a later school start times.
- Name three disadvantages to later school start times.
- Short answer response needed: As you establish class norms for the semester in your class, how might you address the emotional needs of your students? How can you do this via “distance learning” platforms?
