Discussion Question
Plato’s Symposium tackles the question: What is Love? Ultimately, we are told by Socrates that Eros is philosophy, the love of wisdom. How does Diotima’s Ladder of Love” guide one to understand Plato’s forms, the form of ‘Beauty,’ ‘truth’, ‘good’? How does love of body, lover and beloved relationships, inspire one to love wisdom? Do you see this playing out in “The Loving Story”, the documentary on Richard and Mildred Loving? Might the Ladder of Love be useful for addressing our current challenges with the pandemic, social distancing, and other injustices?
` Defend your position with quotes from the readings, film, lecture notes and your line of reasoning
If you have a position, you should strive to provide reasons in defense of that position. When responding to peers, you should strive to first understand the reasons they are offering before challenging or critiquing those reasons. One good way of doing this is by summarizing their argument before offering a critique or evaluation. Be sure to use terms in line with Socrates and Plato. For example, Knowledge, according to Plato, involves truth and is never false, and never changes (see Lecture Notes on Plato).
` Care with language
All postings (including replies to peers) are expected to be thought out, proofread for mechanical, grammatical, and spelling accuracy, and to advance the discussion in an intelligent and meaningful way (i.e., saying something like “I really enjoyed what you had to say” will not count). You are also encouraged to do outside research and quote from that as well. Also, keep in mind your ethical guidelines for engaging in sensitive, high-stakes conversations.

In Diotima’s “Ladder of Love”, the philosopher explains how when one looks beyond physical attraction, they will be able to comprehend the true definition of what they view as “beautiful”. Too often do individuals define the essence of beauty as the form of which it takes outside of a person (Westacott). Allowing yourself to look beyond physical beauty, and to understand the depth that an individual has beneath their skin, can open up new realizations of spiritual and moral enchantment. With these realizations, one will look further than sexual attraction, and yearn to establish specific connections with other individuals that will ultimately make them a better person. This specific aspect of Diotima’s Ladder of Love can be translated to Plato’s form of what is “good”. Additionally, Diotima touches upon the idea of how “beauty” and “truth” coincide with each other in the foundations of what we define as morally good as human beings. A lover will most likely turn to philosophical understanding when determining their morals in a relationship with another individual. These morals, created out of more than just physical love, serve as the backbone of what may be considered good law and institution.
Lastly, the Ladder of Love speaks of the benefits one receives when removing their specificities of individual beauty and a particular beautiful body. Most of the time, one is yearning for a specific type of physical beauty they lack in their partners, and this desire is what arises within the sight of individual beauty. Before even having a discussion with an individual, one may already be aroused, and quite simply, ready to devote themselves to the sexual thought of that new presumed relationship. However, the progress of the ladder of love speaks on how when an individual realizes that everybody is unique and beautiful in it’s own way, the aspects of an individual (such as their personality and morals) which were previously ignored, due to sexual attraction, are now things that are recognized. Understanding the depth that a person has beyond their physical beauty is what drives the passion for any particular body.

Love cannot be defined because it is too vague. According to Socrates, love cannot be mortal or immortal, but both. Mortal and immortal are complete opposites, so how can love be both? Diotima explains to Plato,”Love is neither mortal nor immortal, but is a spirit, which falls somewhere between being a god and being human.” I think that love is something that people will always desire. It may be attainable, but the desire will never be fully satisfied.
I think that Diotima’s Ladder of Love is a basic guide on how people fall in love, transitioning to attraction to deep connections. Love starts with a person realizing their attraction to “beautiful bodies.” Later, that attraction progresses to falling in love with a person’s mind or intellect. Using the Love Ladder, Richard and Mildred follow the same steps. Richard and Mildred grew up in the same community as one another. During this time of racism, Mildred and Richard could have developed an attraction to their opposite race. After they realize their attraction for each other as individuals. They will begin to appreciate the differences in their body and individual uniqueness. As Mildred and Richard get to know each other, their relationship goes beyond physical attributes and their intellectual connection is what bonds them. This when a relationship becomes more complex, because the ugly and beautiful parts of an individual’s personality shines through. As the steps on the ladder continue to ascend, Richard and Mildred would have to love the institutions that have raised them. However, Richard and Mildred find it difficult to love the government and community that disapproves of their marriage. I believe that Richard and Mildred have achieved the last step of the ladder together because they endured all of the hate and obstacles that were trying to keep them separated from one another. Their knowledge allowed their love to prevail. Finally, as they realize the Form of Beauty, their need for other things become less important than their need for each other. I think that it could have been easier for the Lovings to end their relationship prematurely because it would have saved both people from the hurt caused by the hate of others. However, if it was not for the Lovings, steps to legalize interracial marriage would never have been made.
I think that the ladder could be used to reach the end goal of full love and acceptance. I think that the social climate of the world and public safety are in great danger should idealistically be solved with “love”. It is almost impossible to fully love other human beings without bias in the most understanding way. I think the Ladder of Love may help others help accept another person’s background and opinions. Although America is known for its promise of freedom, equality is still far away. If people were to truly love one another outside of desire and attraction, equality would be attained. Love is fleeting and never static, which is why it is hard to achieve. I believe that if people truly loved each other, they would have social distanced themselves properly in the beginning of this pandemic. I think that people did not “love” each other enough to stay away from each other to avoid the spread of the virus.
