A Presentation on IM and KM in Business

  1. Assignment Aims This assignment gives you the opportunity to investigate company (any
    • rganisation) and to understand how that company could make use of the ideas, models, and techniques we have discussed in the module.
  2. Learning Outcomes This assignment covers all the Learning Outcomes given in the module specification. It allows you to explore the ideas from the module with reference to a specific, real world, organisation.
  3. Assessment Brief

Scenario

The assignment is based on the following scenario.

You have recently been appointed to a graduate position in a large company. Your new manager notes from your CV that you have studied “Information and Knowledge Management”, and that you received a high grade. She sends you the following email:

From: A.Manager@company.com

To: A.Trainee@company.com

Good Morning, I see that you have studied “Information and Knowledge Management”. I would like you to do two things for me. First, I have heard these terms, but I am not clear on what they mean. Could you prepare a brief presentation for our next team meeting that explains them and most importantly shows how we could exploit these ideas? Second, we are going to introduce UML modelling to support development of our new database system. Could you please prepare some sample UML to model a part of our organisation, along with a small database example that we could use to train the team in SQL? Remember that we have started to adopt MS Sway. A good chance to try it out! I’d like to know what you think about it. Thanks!

Choosing a Company

First, choose your company.

Then, spend some time carrying out research on the company so that you understand the business sector in which they operate, something about the organisational culture, and so on. This background knowledge should enable you to apply the ideas from the module to this target company.

The company can be any organisation for which information is widely available. It could be a business, charity, sports team, academic institution, or any non-profit making concern.

4. Marking Scheme

You should write an informal presentation of about 15 minutes, that closely addresses the questions raised in the first paragraph of the email above. You should make use of Microsoft Sway for this purpose.

The presentation should be prepared in a format (and using language) appropriate to a professional environment.

Your assignment will be assessed for its coherence and quality in directly addressing the questions set. Generalised coverage will attract few marks, whereas focus, sound analysis, and critical review will attract high marks. At this level critical analysis is required, not just description.

You should provide evidence of wider reading, including books and journal articles for up-to-date, research-related material. You may consult other information sources such as newspapers, blogs, or videos provided they are reliable and reputable.

Although you may find the Internet useful, do not expect to find all the information that you require there. Be sure that you reference the material you choose as evidence to support your argument. The material provided to you in the teaching sessions should be taken as a starting point for your own research.

Since formal academic referencing would not be appropriate in an internal team meeting, you should include a “Further Reading” section at the end of the presentation. Here you must include full references to all the sources that you have used, in the APA Style. Your assignment must be your own work (ask for advice if in ANY doubt).

The specific criteria that will be used to assess the work are given in the rubric below. If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask.

5. Grading Rubric
