Well, you know what our project is about and if you read the article, you will know how it retains to it. The annotated bibliography is not just a summary, but how we can use it to explain the aspects in our paper.
Domain definition
We are focusing on the domain of transportation, specifically in Greater Philadelphia. SEPTA is the metropolitan transport authority in the area. They provide bus, trolleybus, subway, and rail services. In 2013, 36,023,000 million people used SEPTA, as it is the dominant means of mass transit in Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPTA, 2013).This domain interests us because the strength of our economy depends on the mobility of the people. People would have a hard time moving throughout Philadelphia without reliable transportation. It is a cheap and efficient way to get from point A to point B, as opposed to driving or taking taxis. Although SEPTA transports millions of people per year, there are many problems that can be fixed through informatics.
Problem Definition
The problem we are trying to solve pertains to the lack of information available to passengers. They are often unaware of changes in schedules, delays, and arrival times of their transport. There are applications available for smartphones that provide all the information needed to ride SEPTA , but nothing for those without smartphones. There are a significant amount of people in today who don’t have smartphones, and many with smart phones are not aware of the SEPTA applications. These people have trouble navigating the SEPTA routes and knowing when the train or bus will be arriving. This is a problem that needs to be addressed in order to create a more seamless travel experience.
People, Information, Technology
There are many people who would benefit from a solution to this problem. Children, seniors, tourists, foreigners, and people who are without smartphones can benefit from a solution. These groups of people rely heavily on SEPTA to travel to their destinations. A smart and effective solution would assist them greatly in their travel. The people riding SEPTA should have information at their convenience from a sources at various key locations throughout Greater Philadelphia.
There is plenty of information involved while travelling with SEPTA. Timings, destinations, train numbers, routes, token amounts, and names of routes all have to be kept track of. It is easy to be confused by this plethora of information, especially for those who are not familiar with it all. If neatly organized and presented, the information can make travelling much easier. The information also needs to be accessible to all those who need it, when they need it.
Passengers may not be carrying around a copy of the paper timetables or have access to the internet from their connected devices. Some passengers do not posses connected devices, and those who have one may not have the SEPTA app. There needs to be a technology that is accessible to all people who can utilize its services. At the moment, there is a very limited scope for real-time tracking. Real-time tracking can be very important, especially who are on tight or planned schedule, and if there are unforeseen events, such as storms, outages, etc. We plan to provide solution that will alleviate all the aforementioned problems.
