Prompt: Social Media and Web 2.0

1) Visit the websites of several social media sites (MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter). What differences do you notice between these various sites? Are you a member of any of these services? Why or why not?

2) In 2011, Google introduced Google+ as a Facebook competitor. Read this article: com/2011/06/29/technology/29google.html?pagewanted=all” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/29/technology/29google.html?pagewanted=all Then conduct some research on your own about Google+. How do you think Google+ compares to Facebook? Have you tried using Google+? Why or why not? Do you think Google has a chance at successfully competing against Facebook? Why or why not?

3) Find an article online about an incident where an employee was fired for social media use. Summarize and critique the article in your own words. Do you think the termination of the employee was justified? Why or why not? Could the employer have done anything to prevent this incident? Be sure to include the URL of your article.

4) Come up with three concrete recommendations for improving your chosen information system. Make sure you do not just identify the problems, but that you also make very specific recommendations for how you would correct those problems. This is going to be a very important part of your Analysis Essay 2, so make sure you come up with three original, concrete recommendations for improving your system and that you explain how you would implement each one. It is NOT an option to say, “My system can’t be improved.” Information systems can always be enhanced and made better, and it is your job in this class to come up with three good concrete recommendations for improving your information system.

Forum Post 1:

Good afternoon class, I hope everyone is having a great week.

Over the years, social media has evolved into the oversized internet juggernaut that it is today. Social media platforms revenue billions of dollars and have enabled new advertisement strategies for companies, as well as created new jobs for programmers around the world.

1. The differences I notice between the sites mentioned in this weeks question are the following; MySpace offers profile customization on an advanced level. Users on this platform can add music, backgrounds and even have top friends on their profiles. Facebook is equipped with numerous add-ons such as games, marketplace to sell items, dating, financial services to send and receive money and even videos. LikedIn is designed for employers and employees to network and connect for career growth and opportunities. Twitter is known for it’s social popularity creating a platform to share their thoughts on a massive level through texted posts called tweets. I’m a member of Facebook and LinkedIn but I don’t use Twitter or MySpace as Twitter seems more for the younger crowds and and MySpace is very outdated entirely.

2. When compared to Facebook, Google+ has similar services but is more popular in the United States. According to a 2018 article on thebalancesmb.com, Facebook has publicly reported more daily and monthly active users than Google+ but that number may have changed. Additionally, approximately 77% of Google+ users were reported to be male and 23% female. With the traction Facebook has gained, I don’t see Google+ competing against them because the notoriety Facebook has is almost hard to emulate. Since most social media sites do roughly the same thing, we run into the issue of carbon copies rather than valued alternatives. Google+ does relatively the same things as Facebook but since Facebook has already gained so much traction, I find it hard for Google+ to take them down.

3. The article I found involved a Maryland employee who worked in the State Governors office. The employee was terminated in August 2020 for Facebook posts in support of a 17 year old suspected active shooter in custody named Kyle Rittenhouse. The Maryland employee posted, “Don’t be a thug if you can’t take a slug” and was ultimately terminated due to the divisive statements and political visibility they had. The termination was completely justified as the Governors office stated it went against the core values they were charged to enforce. Since the employee had freedom of speech, the employer could have advised the member against posting something like that, but the member did so on his own time with his own personal laptop therefore couldn’t be stopped by the employers at all.

4. Three things that can improve Air Force Training Records (AFTR) which is my system of choice are the following:

Adding a notification system that tells members when something requires their actions and where. Currently, if someone needs to sign something off, they can’t view exactly what they need to take care of rather than just know something isn’t completed 100%. A notification system that sends emails to members and supervisors for signatures would be extremely beneficial.

Creating a training calculator for each member that can be controlled by the trainer to give them a respective timeline that can be viewed by others. Having a calendar that can be controlled by the proper authority can increase training timelines and reduce expenses.

Give users the ability to remove journal entries. Currently, journal entries can’t be removed requiring an additional entry to be added explaining the previous one to be null/void.

These suggestions can be implemented through a series of updates in the system and managed with training for all members to understand how to use them and why.

Class,

Starting with myspace; From the surface, myspace has changed a lot from the last time I remember using it 10 years ago. It used to be a lot like Facebook, but now it seems to be centered more around music. I can tell they have completely changed their business model. Granted my memory could be fallible on this one. I have an account with myspace but I have not used it since I was 10 or 12 years old. I tried to log in but I no longer have access to any of my accounts since then. Furthermore, Facebook is built with the community in mind. Everything on this website involves a group of people. For example, group accounts so that a certain organization of people can talk to each other. Businesses thrive on Facebook through the number of likes they get from the populous. Businesses can also get reviews. Instagram is used for posting photos and advertisements the more followers you have, the better. I think of that website as a giant popularity contest. Linkedin is built with professionals in mind people can use this to post their credentials and professional accomplishments. I do not have an account with LinkedIn mainly because I never thought of getting one.

Google+ was an effort for Google to compete with Facebook. Knowing that they were behind they created a social media network much like Facebook. However, I think they went wrong on a couple of levels. First, the name does not sound attractive and I can’t even find it when I google “Google +” which puts them at an immediate disadvantage. Facebook on the other hand all I need to do is google “F” and Facebook is one of the first things to come up. Furthermore, Facebook is a household name and it will take a long time for the network effects to kick in with Google+. I do not think that Google has a chance to compete with Facebook because they are too well known among the populous. Google will need to make some extreme changes or Facebook is going to need to ruin its reputation with its users for Google to have a dying chance… sorry google

A blog written by Ally talks about how she was fired from her job for posting a deal that her company had made with a pretty big client before the company authorized the release. A Co-worker discovered this and immediately brought it up to leadership. The company’s decision to fire this individual was very justified. The fact that posting without the company’s consent was written in the rule book is a clear violation of the company’s policy. The moral of this story is NEVER post anything about your company on your social media without prior authorization it will only hurt you.

One thing I think they need to improve with AFVEC is to have a backup to submitting TA. They can improve this by creating a backup site specifically for submitting TA in the event that AFVEC goes down. Furthermore, I think they should create a blog and wiki. Having a blog that is continuously updated will help students stay up to speed with changes or learn more about their education benefits. A wiki could be a great information source written by anyone and accessed by anyone in the Airforce. If they actually did this they would have more people visiting their website.
