Prompt: Google Research & Development Initiatives
Instructions:
In your final case study, you will analyze five Google technologies that are current under research and development, including the self-driving automobile and four other technologies of your choice. The last chapter of your textbook discusses the search and advertising technologies of Google. While Google is best known for their search and advertising technologies, they also have a multi-billion dollar research and development department that works on cutting edge technologies ranging from self-driving automobiles to renewable energy. For your final case study, you will research 4 technologies (in addition to the self-driving automobile) that Google is currently developing, other than the search, advertising, and Gmail features that we are already familiar with.
Google technologies currently in research and development include:
- Self-driving automobile
- Project Wing (a drone delivery project)
- Google Fiber
- Smart Contact Lenses
- Google Glass
- Project Loon (providing Internet service via balloon)
- Home Automation and Smart Thermostats (Google Nest)
- Renewable Energy and Sustainability Solutions (Advanced Wind Energy, and several others)
Spend some time Googling and searching online and you will likely discover several other technologies currently being developed by Google. Below are some links to get you started in your research:

The Moral Case for Self-Driving Cars
Self-Driving Cars Could Save 300,000 Lives Per Decade in America
Self-driving cars could save more than 21,700 lives, $450B a year
Questions for Discussion:
1. In addition to the self-driving automobile (which everyone will analyze), which other four Google technologies would you like to research for your Final Case Studies?
2. Share one interesting finding with the class about each of the five technologies you will be researching (your four chosen technologies plus the self-driving automobile).
3. Which of these technologies do you think has the greatest potential to improve our society in the future? Why?

Forum Post 1:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Robotics
- Drone Projects
- Cancer detecting Pill
Google is trying to position itself as a powerhouse like Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, SAP, etc.
The four other Google technologies would I would like to research are
Artificial Intelligence-Google’s AI department is working with retailers to improve their connection with consumers by reviewing customers browsing history and suggesting products that will capture the customer’s attention. Google is aggressively trying to obtain more market shares of the Cloud Computing industry.
Robotics- Google is venturing into the robotic arena by building robots that human personalities.
Drone Projects- Google is testing Drone delivery. The Biden Administration is trying to speed up un-manned aircraft operation. Google will be a participant in the research of using commercialization UMA.
Google Auto self-driving car – Changed name to Waymo. Waymo belongs Subsidy Company of Google Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Goggle. Waymo development self–driving cars are making progress. Car Projected to hit the market soon. Waymo has requested from California DMV a permit to start rides and delivery services.
Cancer detecting Pill – Google is trying to develop a pill that will resolve health issues in humans. The pill would identify cancer, imminent heart attacks, and other diseases.
The great potential of google technologies to our society in the future is cancer and disease detecting pill. If development is successful, the pill could be used as early detection for cancer and other diseases. Early detection is an essential element to treating most of these diseases. Early treatment could prolong the life of many people who have cancer and other diseases.
Forum Post 2:
Classmates,
Greetings to you all. Google seems to be in stiff competition with Amazon in the technology department. Google is providing technologies that we could see soon. With technology, Google is wanting to make the world an easier place for people to live in. I was great to read the various number of technologies for this week’s reading. Beside talking about the self-driving automobile, I will also write my paper on Project Wing, Smart Contact Lenses, Google Glass, and Home Automation and Smart Thermostats, also known as Google Nest. I believe each of these technologies have the potential to assist their customers with new innovative ways of doing business today.
The self-driving automobile has been in the works since 2009. Since that time, only 16 accidents were reported, but none of these accidents were at fault of the self-driving automobile (LaFrance, 2015). It seen as if Google’s biggest concern is not the self-driving car itself but cutting down on accidents around the world and make it safer for people to travel.
The Project Wing is a new development in delivery services from Google. Project Wing was designed to get smaller packages under three pounds delivered to customers quickly. This is designed to have a drone, that weighs 19 pounds and the three-pound package for a max weight of 22 pounds. The issues the drone is having is customers are grabbing the items off the line without waiting on the release of the product (Ingraham, 2014). This causes issues in frequent repairs of the drone.
Google’s Contact Lenses helps those individuals who are suffering from diabetes regulate the glucoses levels more effectively. The contact lenses have an antenna and pin-size holes to capture data and link the information into a nearby Bluetooth device(s) (Tsukayama, 2014). This is an important technology for to help those who are constantly having to monitor their levels. Truly, who wants a device stuck in their eye. I understand the shift in technology. With the number of diabetes patients being older, getting them to put this device in their eye may be a challenge.
Next, the Google Glass was a technology that was brought about to help workers in common fields such as health care and manufactories to be able to chart reports through Google Glass. Health care physicians and doctors were able to spend more time with their patients and allow Google Glass to take notes and store it onto the computer. It is like having an extra pair of hands to a person. For those working in a factory or warehouse, the data they are collecting can be transferred into the computer with them without doing more work (Statt, 2020). I remember hearing about this product, and it eventually was shelved in 2015.
Last, the Home Automation and Smart Thermostats, also known as Google Nest is a home system that gives Android and Google customers the ability to control smart home device from their phones. From smoke detectors, to appliances, lights, door locks, and even thermostats can be operated using Google Home Automation (St. John, 2014). For those would have Apple Devices, this is not compatible. I have a smart home system in my apartment, but it can be monitored with Apple and Android devices. One way Google to get more customers is to have an iOS platform for those who operate with Apple devices.
The technology that will have the greatest potential to improve our society in the future is the Google’s Project Wing. The reason why I chose the technology is because with Amazon leading the way with fast delivery of customers products, this will get Google customers smaller items faster. With this technology, there is no need to wait around for a delivery driver or potential delay in delivery. Although there are some kinks to work out the drone, this could be a potential technology that the world can see and be helpful for future quicker deliveries.
