Last week I chose : Dana Fleming’s “Youthful Indiscretions: Should Colleges Protect Social Network Users from Themselves and Others?”
got the report off here and answered with:
I chose “Should Colleges Protect Social Network Users from Themselves and Others?” in this articular, attorney and author Dana L. Fleming claims that social network should not be monitored. Dana also states that monitoring is necessary if the information is related to someone’s profile or effect on that person’s educational career. Dana’s claim appeals to reason by pointing out the 1st Amendment gives us “Freedom of Speech” or there is death situation then the website should be monitored. Dana also appeals to ethics in order to validate her claim. “A review of a student’s profile may be appropriate where that student is involved in a disciplinary proceeding”. “The other one is that some schools use material from Myspace and Facebook in their judicial proceedings while others turn a blind eye to the site.”
Besides reasons to support the claims, there is also opposing claim such as social network should be monitored and consequences shall come to the students that show disorderly conduct online. There are some reasons to support this opposing claim. For example, Dana mentions online social networking becomes dangerous because of the transcend disciplinary actions and reputation harm. The other reason would be people are expected to behave on campus and online that is consistent with the University’s Honor Code and Guiding Values.
