Throughout your study in this unit you have investigated a variety of microbial diseases, including methods used to detect these diseases in a clinical setting. In this assignment you will undertake a critical review investigating different diagnostic techniques used in clinical microbiology. In your review you should:
- summarise the common culture-based and molecular diagnostic techniques used in clinical microbiology today;
- compare and contrast the use of culture-based methods and molecular methods. You should discuss the advantages and disadvantages relating to the use of each of these groups of diagnostic techniques, including the limitations to their use;
- dDiscuss factors that need to be taken into consideration when developing a new diagnostic technique for use in a clinical setting;
- based on your research, what do YOU think is in the future of clinical diagnostics in microbiology (ie. what sort of techniques do you think will be relied upon in the future, and why?)
