1) In preparation for Week 4 / Discussion #2, we will be watching the Outsourced Movie, which is a romantic comedy – 90 minutes total. It was directed by John Jeffcoat in 2006. This movie will frame our cultural competency studies for the semester. It is a fun way to really understand the complexities of communication in a business environment when different cultures are involved. It was directed by John Jeffcoat in 2006.

Please locate this movie, which is available on various streaming services. You should watch the entire movie as soon as possible, because the foundation of our cultural and global business curriculum is built on various scenes from this movie.

Here are some simple cultural handouts that will help you to understand the key differences that Todd faces when working in India. (Please remember the Hofstede Cultural Dimensions too).

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Watch the movie.
  2. Locate and Review all 4 of the handouts listed above.
  3. Culture Wheel: At the beginning of the movie, Todd experienced several aspects of cultural differences. Consider some parts of the Culture Wheel that he experienced upon his arrival in India.
  4. Iceberg: Try to describe scenes from the movie where Todd began to experience different categories of human interactions and behavior that are listed on the Iceberg diagrams.
  5. Culture Shock: Reflect on at least one memorable scene in the movie. Describe what stage of Culture Shock that Todd is going through during this segment of the movie.
  6. Reflection: Describe how YOU might have reacted to a surprise trip to a culture very different from your own. Now, just a few weeks after we’ve started this class, do you think you would approach it any differently?

  1. Compose your initial post, by discussing the elements above (sections C / D / E and F).
  2. Respond to at least (2) peers initial posts and continue to support your thoughts by citing course material and outside resources.

Purpose

Chapter 9 – Formulation of National Trade Policies and Chapter 10 – International Cooperation Among Nations.

This week’s textbook readings discuss some hot topics that have been in the news over the past year. The opening Ch 9 case about Huawei continues to be relevant, as you can find many stories about the company in 2020. The opening Ch 10 case discusses Mexico. There are numerous other interesting topics to explore in these two chapters (such as Brexit), and you are encouraged to pick one of interest to you to share with the class, remembering to supplement your post with a link to a current news article.

Discuss any key concept that is of interest to you from the text, such as: Opening Case, Venturing Abroad, E-World, Bringing the World into Focus, Emerging Opportunities or People, Planet, and Profits, or the Closing Case.

Instructions

  1. Review the readings and resources provided this week.
  2. Next, in order to understand the key concept of Exchange Rates, please read the box at the bottom of page 219 “Bringing the World Into Focus.” The article entitled “A Brief Hint” will give you tips on comparing currencies if you are a bit confused. They suggest to substitute “a loaf of bread” for the name of the currency. After you’ve read that, please watch the short video clips on the page in the module that explain “What is an Exchange Rate?”
  3. Compose your initial post, answer the following:
