HUS 2315 SPC College Implications of This for Child Rearing Response

1)Parents often act in ways appropriate for adults, but not for children. What are the implications of this for child rearing? List five common behaviors (e.g., smoking cigarettes, handling conflict with aggression) that you as a parent would try not to do around your children.

The effects of how parents act are crucial because this will result in their children imitating the negative behaviors presented to them. Children tend to observe their parents, after all, they are the grown-ups whom they look up to. Their idea is wanting to grow up to be like their parents, so parents should model appropriate behaviors for their children. A parent is the main role model for their children and how their children are brought up will have a significant impact on who they become. Some behaviors that I as a parent would try not to do around my children is to not have road rage. Driving is a very dangerous activity and I will teach my children to be patient and calm. In relation to road rage, I would not set a bad example and attempt to drunk drive. The third behavior that I would not show my children is being rude and disrespectful to restaurant staff. I feel this behavior as a parent I should not portray is being racist. Children feel the need to trust anything that their parents say to them so their natural reaction is to believe what they are taught. The last behavior that I would not do around my children is showing aggression during times of frustration or stressful situations. This could be anything from slamming things in the house when upset or using abusive language. This type of behavior is observed from a children’s viewpoint and it will become a bad habit for them in acting violently. As a parent, we try to do our best to educate and exhibit positive behaviors so that our children learn how to display proper characteristic traits. At least when seeing results that our children have turned out to be good individuals, we can praise ourselves for becoming great examples for them.

2)  I did some research on television ratings and when they started to really be used. The information I found was off Wikipedia website. It began to be talked about in the December of 1996 and started to be used in January of 1997. Violence on television has always been used to put blame on someone acting out in a violent manner. However, at the end of the day that person is more then capable of telling the difference between right and wrong. Television rating did help some of the content that was being introduced to young and impressionable minds. When we talk about censorship on television we have to speak to the adults in the room, at least for children watching television. Adults are able to watch any of the 4 main rating systems on television, in theater and in print. I get that the media does have the right to be able to tell the news, publish an article and put a variety of entertainment on television all over the world. The media can also choose what it puts on for viewers and when it comes to the news as seen much more in today’s society not everything you see is “truth or real”. So, to end this discussion as Albert Einstein once said, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change”.
