This assessment will focus on the COAST program and support student’s ability to connect course content with authentic programs contained within our communities.
The following steps will guide students in the completion of this assessment:
Step #1: Familiarize yourself with the COAST program by reviewing the following resources (it is recommended that you take notes and consider the history, purpose, and goals of this program and how it has evolved over the years.

Step #2: Watch the following video, take notes, and analyze the behaviour of the citizen. Assume that you are the officer on scene, explain how you would approach this situation by reflecting upon what you perceive the officers did well or poorly in handling this incident. What questions would you ask the citizen? Did the officers account for the potential risks? Did the officer’s use their resources well? Are there other considerations to take into account when managing situations such as these?

Live PD: Take a Step Back (Season 2) A&E
Step #3: List the Non-Police Actors within the Safety and Well Being Web that you believe could support this citizen and the police officers and discuss if the support represents emergency response, risk mitigation, prevention, social development and/or a combination of any of these community activities. (Textbook reference pages 93-107).
Step #4: Figure 4.7 (page 108 textbook) represents an overlay of the Safety and
Well-Being Web on the Framework for Community Safety and Well Being. Police are at the center of this web because of their significant role in emergency response. Based on this scenario, propose ways in which police agencies can leverage the support of non-police actors when handling similar situations in the future. Be sure your response is specific and includes examples of problem-solving, partnerships, and collaboration.
