Humanities History of Rock and Roll Discussion Paper

The push to define a regional style often comes as much from the promotion departments of record companies as from the local artists and fans. The documentary video Hype (1996), a revealing portrait of the role of Sub Pop Records in the Seattle alternative rock scene, suggests that many Seattle-based musicians and fans rejected the grunge label as a commercial gimmick, especially when it was adopted by advertising agencies and upscale fashion designers (e.g. Marc Jacobs). For this discussion board, you should reflect on the role that the tension between commercialism and authenticity plays in the creation and promotion of rock music (perhaps even music in general).  You can reflect on where you see this tension in the “grunge” bands of the late 80s and 90s, whether you think this term is appropriate, if you take issue with the word “grunge” and its meanings and applications, or you can reflect on commercialism and authenticity in other rock genres of the past and present.  Please listen to the required listening and viewing before you complete this discussion board.
