HUM 110 GC Role of Nature in Lightening Life of Humans Discussion

I’m working on a humanities discussion question and need support to help me learn.

In this discussion, all that is required two responses for two different topics. The first response is at least 200 words and the second one is at least 50 words.

The first response is for the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2afuTvUzBQ. Please watch the video and use the prompt in the first option to write the first 200 words.

The second response is for the article attached in the pdf file below. Please read the article and use the prompt in the second option to write the 50 words.

Below are the instructions from the prompt please go over it to have a better idea about the assignment.

  • You get an initial 5 points for writing on-topic (there are three offered this time). You get a further 10 points for writing a coherent and reflective consideration of that chosen topic. Take it seriously; think of it as a mini-essay. This initial post must be at least 200 words and must include a word count at the end. Once posted, it will allow the board to open and connect you with your peers.
  • You then get 5 points each for a response to one other topic — meaning on a different topic than your own initial post — and one response to a student post on any topic (you’re welcome to talk to multiple students too, of course). That way you’re always discussing at least two different topics. Again, there are three subjects up for possible consideration this time.
  • These second and third posts must be at least 50 words each.
  • If there’s no second topic under discussion yet, be the first and start a new thread!

CHOOSE ONE:

1) Consider the metaphor operating in Plato’s Parable of the Cave. Are we living like we have blinders on, perceiving only a distorted reality? Give examples to illustrate how/why this is the case (or not) and, if so, what someone you know did about it. This might be a friend or family member, or even a public figure you admire. Next, how can we become enlightened? By way of illustration, propose some public/historical figure to fit the role of the enlightened martyr suggested at the end of the video.

2) Pick one of these three celebrated maxims and take a position on it. Explain what you think the expression means and then put it into practice, giving examples from your own life, lives of friends or acquaintances, or a public figure if you prefer. Don’t discuss anything that’s too personal or uncomfortable. The intent is to express your understanding of the idea, as you see it, and demonstrate how it might work in real life.

  • Protagoras: “Man is the measure of all things.”
  • Heraclitus the Obscure: “It is not possible to step in the same river twice.”
  • Socrates: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

3) Respond to the notion of utopia, the concept and description of an ideal society — even if such a place can only truly exist in our imaginations (hence as a description). First, summarize Plato’s Republic, the original utopia, giving at least five clear details about it (see the class materials). Then describe what you would consider a perfect society. What problems would need to be solved, and how? You need to consider social, economic, educational, environmental, and any other areas that you deem necessary. Obviously everyone has different ideas about what’s important and/or problematic, so there’s no absolute right or wrong. Nonetheless, consider the categories seriously and be prepared to defend your utopia in the discussion!
