Goodwin University (formally Goodwin College)

Required Text: Sporre, D. J. (2013). Reality through the arts (8th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education.

Overview:

Welcome to Week two of the course where we will be looking at two-dimensional art such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography, as found in Chapter One of our textbook and the handout, Looking at Works of Art. Using formal criticism, a method of analysis in which we look only at the work of art itself, we will observe the formal and technical elements of a painting in order to gain a deeper appreciation of how an artist uses these elements to create an aesthetic response.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

  • Learn a list of necessary terms encountered in the course
  • Note and label compositional elements and devices used in drawing and painting.
  • Recognize the basic elements of the major artistic genres

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After reading the text and viewing the lecture notes and additional materials, students will be able to:

  • Identify technical elements in two-dimensional art.
  • Describe the use of compositional elements in two-dimensional art.
  • Familiarize themselves with the genres of art in this course.

SUMMARY OF UNIT ACTIVITIES:

  • Complete assigned text readings
  • Read the articles
  • Participate in the class discussion

Read Chapter 1 pp. 38-66

Activities and Assessments

Week 2 Discussion:

View and take notes on the oil on canvas painting The Luncheon of the Boating Party (1880-81) by the Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renior. … (MUST BE 150-200 WORDS)

Essay Due in week 3:

Please begin working on the Essay.

According to Sporre ( 2013), “formal criticism constitutes analysis that applies no external conditions or information … . When we use formal criticism, we analyze the artwork just as we find it” (p. 28). For this paper, write a two- to three- page essay with an APA formatted cover page and a reference page on which you give the full APA reference citation of the Sporre textbook In this essay, evaluate one of the oil paintings (a list will be provided in class and posted to Blackboard) in the Sporre textbook from Chapter 12 or 13, focusing on both the technical aspects discussed in Chapter 1 and the painting’s appeal to you personally. Discuss the elements you find noteworthy about the painting, using specific details from the work. The APA formatted paper should be written in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced. In the first paragraph of your essay, be sure to mention the date and title of the painting and the page number in the text book on which it can be found. At the end of this paragraph, add a thesis statement outlining what you will be analyzing in your paper.

Your paper must also include a reference page (APA) which contains the complete citation of the course text. Rather than giving the definition of the technical terms used to analyze the painting, you are to apply those terms in your own analysis of the work. For a list of these terms, see today’s handout titled “Looking at Works of Art – Guidelines” under the section called “Aesthetic Scanning, Step 1 and Step 2.” This section gives you a list of six technical elements used for observing art and another six for looking at the composition of the work. Helpful related vocabulary for describing and discussing these elements in your paper is also provided. You must also discuss what it is about this painting that you find interesting or appealing. You may use the first-person point of view for this part of the paper; however, please avoid the second-person “you,” “your,” and “yours.”

No additional sources are to be used for this paper! If outside sources are used, points will be deducted at the instructor’s discretion. 5 points will be deducted from the grade if the subject of the paper is not on the list of oil paintings provided for this assignment. The paper is graded on content (55%), organization (35%), and mechanics (10%), and as with any written assignment, it is recommended that you have someone proofread it before submission or make an appointment with the Academic Success Center for assistance throughout the paper writing process. eTutoring is also available. Please see the Student Support Services section of the syllabus for contact information.

Essay Due in week 4:

Begin Week 4 Essay assignment on a sculpture.

Write a two- to three-page essay with a separate cover and reference page in which you evaluate one of the sculptures in the Goodwin collection by focusing on both the technical aspects and its appeal to you personally.

When you discuss what it is about the sculpture that you find noteworthy and appealing, you may include some speculation or information on what the sculptor is trying to depict or the meaning he or she may have intended; however, any information you use from the text or another research source must be cited.

When you discuss the technical qualities of the work, be sure to focus on the formal and technical topics covered in Chapter Two. They include dimensionality (Sporre 67-70), methods of execution (70-72), composition (72-73), and other factors such as articulation, focal area, lighting, and environment. To help you get started, make a simple list using the above-mentioned terms. Then list the characteristics of the sculpture that apply under each corresponding term. The “Sample Outline and Critical Analysis” on page 84 is also useful. At least 80 % of the paper should be comprised of your own analysis.

At the end of the paper, you must include a copy of a picture of the sculpture and label it with the name of the sculpture and the sculptor and the year the work was made_ (worth 3 points of the grade). You may use your own photo. If you use a picture from another source, be sure to cite it on the works cited page. Any additional sources used in the essay must be cited in the text.

You may choose a sculpture on the Goodwin College campus, a sculpture at a museum, or other public place.

PLEASE DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES BESIDES THE REQUIRED TEXT BOOK AND LINKS POSTED BELOW! IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILAR WITH THE SUBJECT THEN DO NOT TAKE ON THE ASSIGNMENT, THANK YOU!
