Option #1: Colonial Indentured Servant System
Aaron S. Fogleman wrote From slaves, convicts and servants to free passengers in which he described colonial labor. Using your textbook, as well as the assigned readings, do the following in a paper:
- Explain the growth of the colonial indentured servant system.
- Explain how the system of indentured servitude was organized.
- Explain who participated in the system.
- Explain their goals and motives.
- Explain how this system of servitude shaped the American colonies.
- Explain why indentured servitude eventually declined and gave way to the Atlantic slave trade as a major source of colonial labor.
Directions:
- Your paper should be 2 or 3 pages long, not including the required Title and References pages.
- Format your paper according to APA style, following the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.).

- Your paper should include an introduction, a body with at least three fully developed paragraphs, and a conclusion. It should contain a fully developed and supported thesis statement.
- Include a minimum of two academic sources (journal articles, books, etc.) other than the textbook for the course.===============================================================
Option #1 and Option #2: Portfolio Project Selection/Declaration
For the final Portfolio Project (due in Week 8), you will create an essay about an event, person, or era that took place during a period of U.S. history to Reconstruction. The Portfolio Project will be a scholarly essay or digital exhibit written in academic standard 3rd person. You should review the Portfolio Project instructions for Options 1 and 2 in the Week 8 folder, and choose the option you wish to complete.
Your topic posting should include the following:
- A title
- A fully developed thesis statement
- A brief (2-3 sentences) topic summary
- Possible primary sources.
Your final submission of the Portfolio Project must include at least five sources, including the primary source and a scholarly journal article, to support your paper. Review the Writing Center (Links to an external site.) for help with sources.
