The Future of Health Care: What is a Life Worth? To the individual, their family, and friends, their life may be priceless. Our society, however, has to place a price on healthcare and how much are we willing to spend to save or prolong every life? Many economic and cultural factors influence healthcare availability and costs. The presentation focused mostly on important issues such as how to provide affordable care to those who can’t afford healthcare. However, another way to think about this ethical issue was raised–Shouldn’t people take better care of themselves? In “Health Care Finance, Economics, and Policy for Nurses,” it stated that lifestyle choices were the most important factors in improving our health. In the presentation, it was stated that 70% of healthcare costs are driven by lifestyle choices. If the individual thinks their life is worth something, then, the best thing they can do is live a healthier life (Films Media Group, 2010).
Everyone: Then why don’t people choose to live healthier lives and quit smoking?
