(This assignment goes with my last order.)
Before the Interview:
You are to complete a 30-45 minute interview with an acquaintance (not a family member or a good friend). As talked about in class, a fellow student (either from HS24 or another class) that is willing to be interviewed for this assignment is ideal. Do not use the client’s real name (protect their confidentiality). You may use initials or a pseudonym in place of your client’s real name.
Set a time and method (zoom, teams, etc.) to conduct the interview with your “client”. Be sure that your client is aware that the interview will take about 30-45 minutes, will be recorded for learning purposes, and examples of what they might like to talk about.
Suggested topic for the interview session: vocational counseling, interpersonal conflict or anxiety/stressors of everyday living. No need to get heavy (although often can bring up feelings from the “client”); the goal is skill demonstration and analysis.
Make sure that you have CLIENT PERMISSION TO RECORD; be sure to obtain the client’s permission to record the interview (even if you already had it prior to the interview) within the first few minutes (before you start recording) and that they were informed that they could take away consent at any time (even after the interview). You must state at the beginning of your transcription that you asked specifically for permission to record and that your client agreed.
After the Interview:
You are then to transcribe a complete 15 minute section of the 30-45 minute interview using the transcription template format. You do not have to transcribe the full interview, but you need to complete a full interview; transcribing 15 minutes from within a full interview will be adequate. The transcribed interview will likely be between 10 and 15 pages long. Be sure to:
Number continuously each interaction during the interview and be sure to indicate who is speaking at the beginning of each interaction. (ie. 1. SH: Hello client, how are you? 2. JS: I’m good thank you. 3. SH: What would you like to talk about today?) Single space when one person is speaking, double space between speakers (you and your client).
Identify/label the skill for each time you speak; that is for your use of micro skills. The skill label goes in the first column (Skills Classification column). Double labeling may be required for some of your leads, when you use more than one of the skills. You must have a skill listed in this column even when your client is talking.
Comment on your interactions in the COMMENTS column. Discuss what you feel was good or poor in your skill use based on the reaction of your client. If you feel that you use a skill inappropriately, describe what you feel would have been a better approach. Note what worked and what you feel good about too. Any comments about the client or your non-verbal communication would be appropriate in this column as well. Commentary section includes comments on both your and the client’s non-verbal behavior and your skill use.
Identify stages of the interview (5 stages of the interview process) by indicating when you feel that you have reached the end/beginning of a stage. Do not feel that you must cover all stages; in some cases, you may recycle back to an earlier or forward to a later stage. Just be aware of the stages you cover and identify them in the Skill Classification Column.
Remember that this assignment is meant to demonstrate and identify skills learned/used, reflect on skills needed, and identify where you are with your skill use. You are not expected to conduct the interview perfectly, but you should give it your best attempt. You are putting all your skills learned throughout the semester into practice. More importantly, this assignment is about honest reflection about where you are as a developing counselor/social worker/helper. It is meant as a tool for your educational and professional growth.
