Overview

A critical part of this course is your participation in the online discussions. An example or issue will be posted at the beginning of each discussion. Your grade will be a function of the quality and quantity of your participation. You are encouraged to build on the discussion that has already taken place within your weekly discussion groups. In other words, grades are not simply given for answering the discussion questions, but also for critically responding to the previous postings and generating new knowledge and ideas.

Discussions can be completed in a couple of different ways. Your posts can be written, video, audio only, or a combination of these modes throughout (e.g., you can do one post written, another post audio, etc.). Regardless of what method you use, it is important that you maintain professional standards and provide evidence. It is possible to verbally cite sources or include them in the text portion of your discussion post, so please do not forget to do this. While forming opinions and judgments is important, they must be backed by evidence.

To start consider:

What is your personal definition of compensation? Take a moment to think about this. What elements are important in compensation? Share your ideas here and review and like what your classmates have shared by clicking here.

Next, after reviewing the submissions on the Padlet board reflect upon the following and share your thoughts on the discussion board:

• If you have previously worked (part-time, full-time, contract, volunteer), think about what compensation looked like for you. Was it desirable? Was it sufficient? Was it appropriate? Was it fair? (Critical thinking prompt: Are those actually different questions? If so, how are they different?)
• As an employee, do you believe that compensation is a return, a reward, or an entitlement? Would that perspective be different if you were a manager or employer?
• How might your definition be similar or different to the one proposed in the textbook? How is it similar or different from how organizations might treat the idea of compensation?
• How did your thoughts on compensation from the PadletvBoard and discussions compare to your group members’ thoughts, ideas, and experiences?
