In 2-3 formal paragraphs(5 sentences per paragraph) answer one of following questions, and respond to at least two of your classmates’ post.

1. From the beginning Zora Neal Hurston startles us: “I remember the very day that I became colored” (paragraph 2). Why does Hurston insist that one becomes colored? What happened on that day to make her so?

2. Each section of Hurston’s essay explores a different possible identity, some based on skin color, others emphasizing history, culture or gender.  What does Hurston accomplish by such an approach?

3. The final paragraph introduces a key simile: “like a brown bag of miscellany propped against a wall.” How does Hurston develop this simile? What does she mean by it?
