How do you diagnose a car and find its faults with and without tools?

Hello.

I remember a roadside recovery technician diagnosing our car just by asking few question.

The technician: “Did you see a battery sign on your dashboard before stalling.”

Me: “Yes.”

Technician: “Walks over to the car and tries to start it, and then says that the alternator is gone.”

It was that simple and quick and we just replace the alternator and the car started working. So I want to know how he did that and I want to know more about different issues and parts of the car aswell it could be a car over heating problem and I want to know how to diagnose that and pin point it’s fault (Most mechanics squeeze the water pipes with there hands and look at the engine and then diagnose it, I want to know the logic behind that aswell). It could be a car not starting, brakes making noise, steering wheel becoming heavy basically everything that can go wrong with a car and I want to be able to pin point the fault and come up with answers and solutions. Basically all the trade secrets.

In conclusion I want someone write all the faults and its diagnoses to me from your experience plus any book suggestion where I can find these answers or pdf’s, I need all as in detail as possible please. It will be great if you could help me. Thank you.
