At this point, you should have identified a grant you are interested in pursuing for your course assignments. In your textbook readings, you will note there are numerous approaches to project design. Creating a project plan that applies logic, goals, and objectives as well as timelines is important. For this discussion, think about the grant that you have chosen for your assignments. The project design is a road map for the funders. It defines goals and how you will meet them, as well as projected outcomes.
For your initial post to this discussion, write two SMART goals for your project. After each goal, answer the following questions about meeting your goals:
- Who?
- What?
- How?
- Where?
- When?
Response Guidelines
Read the posts of the other learners and respond to the initial posts of two. In each response, suggest ways the learner might improve the clarity or appeal of the stated goals. How could the learner make the goals more attractive to the funder?
Learning Components
This activity will help you achieve the following learning components:
- Differentiate between the goals and objectives for the use of a grant.
- Identify the key elements of a project or program.

This was Discussion 1 for this class.
Non-profitable organizations are purely based on charity work hence need support from other individuals and corporations in terms of financial support (grants) and other material support. The non-profit organization that I would write for a grant proposal is the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie, which offers shelter and other basic needs, such as food and clothing to numerous children who most of them are victims of neglect, abuse, and maltreatment annually (CHP, 2021). Basically, the home operates in a foster care system to improve lives and also empower at-risk families and children.
Searching For Interesting Grants
Carr (2015) noted that finding the right funders or types of grants is a critical step in the grant application writing process. This is since it enables individuals or organizations to scale down to the most plausible funders and grant types that match these individuals or organizations’ objectives. In this case, based on the searches conducted, the three most interesting grants that are available include the HHS Grant, the June, and Julian Foss Foundation grants, and the DANA grants.
The Identified Grants’ Requirements
The United States Government offers the Health and Human Services (HHS) grant through the health and human services department. The HHS grant is one of the biggest grants being offered to states, tribes, territories, and community organizations in the United States. For one to be given this grant, he or she must first fulfill various requirements, which include first registering with Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) (HHS, 2019). This is needed for verification of the applicants. After registering with DUNS, individuals are then required to register with System for Award Management again for verification and to be given E-Business Point of Contact (E-Biz POC) and Authorized Organization Representatives (AORs). The next requirement is for the applicant to register with the Grants.gov website, where also individuals upload their grant proposal. The proposal should include things, such as a letter of interest, the narrative, amount, need, and, lastly, budget. A budget should indicate the expected expenditure, while things such as a letter of interest indicating why one has an interest in HHS grants and why there is a need for a grant.
For the June and Julian Foss Foundation and the DANA grants, there are few formalities needed for each of them. For the two grants, the processes are almost analogous as one needs to first register with their websites. They will be required to upload their grant proposal, containing key components, including a letter of interest, amount, narrative, need, and budget. The letter of interest should indicate why one is interested in these grants, while the amount indicates the grant amount being sought. The narrative is the applicant’s story, while the need part indicates what the applicant wants to use the grant for, and the budget is the expenditure for the need.
Best Choice Grant
Upon evaluation, it is clear that the HHS grant is the best for Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie Organization. This is since the grant is big enough to provide adequate funding that the organization for its operations needs. Again, the grant also aligns with the organization’s objectives and focus. Although there are a lot of processes for application, these efforts will be rewarded by enough funding, and that much of competition will be eliminated in the validation processes. Lastly, I was surprised by the numerous grants appearing after the search. Truly, there are a lot of donors willing to support charity work.

Thanks Joan,
Excellent work! Your post is well developed, organized and supported!
Remember that we are using fictional organizations.
For the course assignments, I have chosen the Childrens Home of Poughkeepsie, in West Park, NY. I will be concentrating on Grants for Unaccompanied Children. Nuevas Alas New Wings | Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie. This program currently helps minors being separated from their families or are seeking serves refugee children who are fleeing from their countries of origin to seek safety in the United States. While the minors are in the program, they are provided with mental health, life skills training, and taught the US Laws and Regulations. They ensure them a healthy stay but overall that they are reunited with their families in a safe manner.
