least 2 and a half pages in a bluebook.
1) We have learned that many figures in the period from 1880-1920 believed in progress.
What do you think they meant by “progress”? Do you agree that this was a progressive
period? Perhaps you agree in part, but not in whole. Did everyone, including women,
African Americans, immigrants, members of the working class, and political radicals
(Socialists, Industrial Workers of the World members, etc) experience progress? How
about business leaders? Explain. Illustrate your points with specific examples from
lectures and readings.
2) In class, we have learned that numerous elites from the Gilded Age to World War I,
including, but not limited to, politicians, judges, and businessmen, were interested in
maintaining social control. What groups did they seek to control? How successful were
they? How do you judge success? Make sure to discuss class, gender, and race.
Illustrate your points with specific examples from lectures and the book.
3) Historians have given many different names to the period between 1880 and 1920: “The
Age of Reform,” “The Age of Organization,” “The Incorporation of America,” and
America’s “First Age of Terror.” Which, if any, of these phrases describes this period
best? Would you offer another phrase to describe this time? If so, what would it be?
