History Mythological Tradition Story Tropes or Themes Questions

Watch the Critical Thinking Assignment Lecture and then answer the Questions at the bottom of the page. There are seven different videos on the Critical Thinking Assignment Lecture. The first one is the main Lecture video. In this video I will explain the various tropes or themes you will see in these creation stories. In the next video I will tell you five of the ten creation stories. The other five will be underneath this Lecture video; these five are linked from Youtube and can be viewed either in Canvas or by following the link to Youtube. The ten different stories are serving the function of giving you an auditory and visual representation of this culture’s origin stories. This provides you the task of essentially being a historian or mythologist in trying to decipher the similarities and differences in these stories.

There are five questions in this assignment (each of which are worth 3 points). Each of these questions will ask you to identify a different trope or theme and then figure out how they are being employed in one of the ten creation stories you have at your disposal. After you have identified them, briefly explain why they fit this trope or theme.

Questions:

*In answering these questions you must use a different mythological tradition in four of the responses.

1. Give one example of a cultural hero.

2. Give one example of a primordial divinity being fashioned into the world/universe.

3. Give one example of human beings created from mud or dirt.

4. Give one example of primordial waters.

5. Choose one other example of a trope, either from the list I gave you or one you know from outside the class, and explain how it works in one of these stories (not in another story you heard somewhere else).
