Essay (50 points) You will write an essay that explores the given topic, one of the two listed
below. It should be a complete essay, including an introduction, a conclusion, and evidence paragraphs,
in the traditional 5 or 6 paragraph format. Because you will have access to your notes, I will be expecting
clear and specific examples from class to support your ideas.

A) How did American foreign policy change after the War of 1812? What areas and tasks did Americans
focus on in the 1790s and 1800s? What did they focus on in the 1820s and 1830s? What were their
goals before and after the war? Did these changes come about because of the war, or other
developments?

B) How did Native Americans affect American foreign relations? Did Americans consider Native
Americans to be related to foreign affairs at the time? How did the interactions affect the way the
American Colonies and United States grew? How did they help, and how did they harm? How did the
Native Americans affect relationships with other foreign powers for the United States? Did American
attitudes toward Native Americans and how to treat with them change over time?

these terms can be used when preparing for the essays.
