Hello, I have an Analysis Paper due November 15th (Monday), 11:59 P.M

Directions:

The objective of this assignment is to use primary sources to explain competing perspectives in the United States on the nation’s war in the Philippines from 1899 to the early 1900s.

Choose at least 2 documents from the set of primary sources for Chapter 19 of American Yawp, and at least one newspaper article published between 1899 and 1905. In the set of primary sources, documents #1, #2, #4, #5, & #7 might be most relevant. (Note that the date for document #1 is 1903, two years after the assassination of McKinley. That’s because they are citing the year the interview with McKinley was published, not when the interview took place.) For the news article, use any of the newspaper databases we’ve used before in this class. See list below.

Assignment:

In your written analysis of 1-2 pages, cover each of the following factors:

  • Explain how the primary source documents you chose illustrate common American perspectives on the U.S. war in the Philippines from the time period of the war.
  • Clearly cite your documents using Chicago Style, either in the footnote or bibliography at the end.

See class rubric in the syllabus for grading guidelines of document analysis assignments.

Newspaper Databases:

Chronicling America, a collection of historical newspapers compiled by the Library of Congress. We’ve used this earlier in the semester. Search by selected keyword(s), and limit the articles to those published anytime between 1899 and 1910.

Oboler Library newspaper databases. Use this page from Oboler Library to find a relevant newspaper article for this assignment. Scroll down to the section on Newspapers. “Access Newspaper Archive,” “America’s News,” and “NewsBank InfoWeb” are likely the best databases to use for our class projects. You will need to log in with your Bengal ID to use these from off campus. Make sure to limit your results to relevant years. The link to “NewsBank InfoWeb” provides access to the Idaho Statesman in Boise, if that’s of interest to you.

Utah Digital Newspapers. This is accessible from the University of Utah Marriott Library. It allows you to search a wide range of Utah newspapers.

Pocatello Tribune. This is a project of the Marshall Public Library.
