I have a paper to be written and these are the requirements below:
Using ideas and information from assigned readings for Unit 2 along with 2 or 3 letters written by soldiers or civilians during the Civil War, write a 3-5 page essay (double spaced) addressing the following assignment.
Explain how the letters and/or diaries from Civil War soldiers or civilians illustrate some of the main themes and interpretations offered by Drew Gilpin Faust in her book This Republic of Suffering.
For letters, search any combination of the following list of digital collections of Civil War letters and diaries. Each of these collections will allow you to search for specific topics or themes within the letters which may help you find letters that best fit the issues you choose to focus on in your essay.
- Civil War Letters of Wellesley College and Brandeis University
- Civil War Diaries and Letters, Iowa Digital Collections, University of Iowa
- Antietam: Letters and Diaries of Soldiers and Civilians, Antietam National Battlefield, National Park Service
- Civil War Letters Collection, University of Washington Libraries
