I’m working on a writing question and need support to help me learn.
The end of the Spanish-American War left Congress with the question of whether the U.S. should annex the Philippines or allow the former colony of Spain to gain its independence. This week you’ll read different perspectives in For the Record from the heated debate over annexation, “The March of the Flag” (92-94) and “Platform of the American Anti-Imperialist League” (94-95). You will also need to consult the Moodle resource entitled “American Soldiers in the Philippines Write Home about the War.”
For the Record and in America, which of these arguments do you believe would have appealed the most to American voters in the early 1900s? Why? (It might help to think about who made up the electorate at this point in time.) To what extent did economics and ideas about race influence the arguments over annexation? Also, how do you suppose the American soldiers in the Philippines would have reacted to Beveridge’s and the Anti-Imperialist League’s arguments?
