This week was rich in primary source documents as outlined on Canvas in Foner (“Voices of Freedom”), Zinn, and in your packet. We have primary sources from slaves and their masters.
What do the letters from slaves (Foner and Zinn) tell you about the nature of slavery and the relationships between slaves and their masters? What does Harriett Jacobs say about slavery and religion?
How do southern slave owners defend slavery? Note the different justifications in the piece from De Bow’s Review (Foner), Calhoun, and Fitzhugh.
In your answer discuss the source, cite some specific examples or passages (with citation), and then place it in our larger understanding of history, slavery, and equality. Compare and contrast these ideas with those from previous units we’ve studied this semester (cite your ideas or passages from other works).
