-[a] Francis Bacon, John Locke, and David Hume begin their respective reflections of empiricism by analyzing the causes of ignorance, i.e., the “problem” of acquiring knowledge. How does each philosopher address the problem of ignorance?
-[b] Hume notes (1) induction is “irrational” and (2) man can never connect ‘cause’ with ‘effect.’ What does Hume mean by these two concepts and what do they purport for the philosophy of science?
-[c] Immanuel Kant famously said that Hume awoke him “from his dogmatic slumbers.” What did Kant mean by this statement? How does Kant address Hume’s assertions? Does Kant’s response adequately reply to Hume’s claims? Why/why not?
