Hero’s Journey Essay (Outline, Rough Draft, Works Cited, & Final Draft all required)
Subject matter of Essay:
Write outline, thesis, body paragraph’s about Scheherazade.
For this essay on the hero’s journey, I will be reflecting on Scheherazade. As the novel begins, we discover Sassanide’s son Schahriar conquers the Persian Empire. It is also revealed that the Sultan Schahriar, has a beloved wife who deceived him completely. Leading the Sultan to order the grand-vizir to assassinate her. Following her death Schahriar began a daily mission to marry and strangle a different wife. The grand-vizir was in charge to hunt these women for the Sultan, until his own daughter requested to be the next one up. Scheherazade was the grand-vizir’s perfect daughter as she obtained wit, beauty, cleverness, and was courageous as any women in her village. With her resources, Scheherazade invented a possible way to avoid anymore murders the Sultan had planned. After successfully requesting to have her sister join the night with them, she ultimately impressed the Sultan with her charming stories, leaving him no choice but to continue his marriage with Scheherazade. As I pondered what three stages of a Hero’s journey were displayed in the novel, Death and Rebirth instantly came to mind. Death and Rebirth was presented throughout the entire second half, since Scheherazade interconnects her charming stories to have a never ending lasting effect, keeping the Sultan entertained. Second, Scheherazade exemplifies a Hero’s Journey by Crossing the Threshold. She went above and beyond, unlike any other woman in her village to take the risk and end the suffering of many. Finally, to conclude the Hero’s Journey, Scheherazade ends the novel with an unusual reward. Her reward was bitter sweet, since she had to continue her marriage with the Sultan, however no more women in her village would be murdered.

Example Outline:
Thesis: In Lucas’ first film Star Wars: A New Hope, Luke Skywalker embodies the archetypal hero described by Campbell, and while Star Wars was indeed an innovative film at its time, its protagonist follows a journey that, Campbell argues, is as old as time.
BP1 Topic Sentence: Commonly, hero tales begin with the unsuspecting protagonist living in an ordinary world where they receive, and then typically resist, a call to adventure (“Hero’s Journey 101”). Closely following this pattern, Luke’s journey begins against the backdrop of his family’s dusty moisture farm on the desert planet Tatooine.
BP2 Topic Sentence: After accepting the call, Luke’s journey continues along the hero’s path, bringing him to a phase of initiation that includes training, trials, and a transformation.
BP3 Topic Sentence: Although he is successful in overcoming these trials, Luke’s journey is far from over as he must still make the perilous return to the ordinary world.

1. Write a 4 to 6 page academic essay in MLA format.
2. Begin with an introductory paragraph that hooks your reader’s attention, provides background information about the Hero’s Journey and Scheherazade, and leads seamlessly into a clearly stated thesis.
3. Develop body paragraphs which incorporate quoted and detailed evidence from Scheherazade & Joseph Campbell’s concept of the Hero’s Journey, while using proper MLA format to cite the texts. Quoted evidence should be incorporated thoughtfully and thoroughly into the essay by establishing context, introducing the quoted passages, and explaining how the passages support the main ideas of the body paragraphs and the essay as a whole.
4. Conclude the essay with a reflection of the story, the Hero’s Journey, and what we your readers, can gain or learn from your analysis.
5. Include a Works Cited page.
Works Cited instructions:
Remember that the Works Cited page is an integral part of an essay. Trying to read an essay with sources, but without the Works Cited page, is like trying to read an essay without vowels. Without the Works Cited page, the rest of it can’t be properly read, and it would be considered plagiarism; therefore, the Works Cited page is numbered as the next page in the document. If you have written 5 pages, the Works Cited page will be page 6.
