Case Two: Wal-Mart: Women Employees, Women’s Empowerment and Diversity
As highlighted in Ch. 5, the initial decision point, Wal-Mart has engaged a number of initiatives where
their ethical dealings have come in to question. Other portions of your text, however, point out their
good works, particularly in the areas of community, environment and sustainability.
Be sure you have read Ch. 6 on Employee Responsibilities and Employee Rights and viewed the PPT
presentation prior to starting this case. Revisit the sections on “Discrimination” (pp. 254-258) and
“Diversity” (pp. 259-262), as these frameworks are the ones to be applied in this case. In addition, read
the Decision Point on p. 263.
This “case” is, in fact, a set of readings about Wal-Mart’s diversity efforts and legal actions taken
against it for alleged discrimination; and excerpts from Wal-Mart’s own 2014 Global Responsibility
Report (GRR). You are challenged to read the resources, and form your own reasoned determination
(based on the articles, Wal-Mart’s GRR, AND the text concepts) about Wal-Mart’s actions.

Answer the Discussion Questions below after completing all readings. The response to each question
should be AT LEAST 2-3 full paragraphs (6-8 sentences in length – not including your in-text
citations/quotes). A well-developed response can be as long as 3-4 paragraphs per question. Recall
that both analysis AND writing are being graded for each question. The assignment is worth 70 points
total (12 analysis and 12 writing points available for each of the 3 questions); see attached Case study
2 evaluation rubric. Your Syllabus states that each case is worth 70 points, so there is a possible 2
point bonus included in the grading points.
Discussion Questions:
1. Even though the Supreme Court dismissed the Wal-Mart class action suit, does there appear to you
to be a pattern of discrimination against women in promotion at Wal-Mart? Be sure to use text concepts
when determining discriminatory practices. Cite specific details/statistics from a minimum of 2 of the
articles that were provided.
2. Read the excerpt from Wal-Mart’s Global Responsibility Report (2014 and 2016) on its Workplace
practices. According to your text and its definitions of diversity, does Wal-Mart have a diverse
workforce? Cite specific Wal-Mart programs or statistics to back up your opinion from the GRR.
3. Read the Decision Point on p. 263 in your text – “Women’s Economic Development programs”. In
addition, read pp. 68-71 in Wal-Mart’s 2014 Global Responsibility Report. Address this question – What
do you think Wal-Mart’s motives were when they launched this program in 2011? Now, reference the
2016 GRR, as described is Wal-Mart it still accomplishing the goals they set out to do and are WalMart’s
motivations the same?
Essay FORMAT: Each paragraph will be 6-8 sentences in length (not including your in-text
citations/quotes) integrating concepts from the textbook and the supported documentation
provided. Your Case Study must be written in proper APA format, Times New Roman or Arial, size 12
font, double spaced, with in-text citations, and a Reference page. Refer to your template from Case 1-
and use appropriate headers/sub-headers within your paper (to clearly identify the discussion question
you are answering).
