In the “Dropping Acid” chapter, Kolbert writes about a failed experiment called Biosphere 2. What happened to this experiment, what are the lessons that scientists have learned from it, and how do they apply to what’s going on in the real world (or Biosphere 1)?
Kolbert also tells us that coral reefs have been lost before during extinction events, suggesting that even if they disappear now, they won’t be gone forever. Are you concerned that the coral reefs are dwindling? Does their current rate of disappearance have bigger implications, or do you think this is just part of the planet’s natural cycle?
