1.In 2020, a section of the Affordable Care Act was revised to remove protection from discrimination in health care based on gender identity. Keeping in mind the concentric-circles model portrayed in the textbook, analyze the relationship between the hospital and a trans patient seeking health care in the wake of this legislative change. In your discussion, make explicit mention where appropriate of such concepts as the norm of impartiality, cognitive dissonance, implicit bias, Kohlberg’s stages of moral reasoning, Piaget’s notions of assimilation and accommodation, and the Big Five personality factors.
Note: This question permits substantial latitude. Students should note that the legislative change is part of society and that events in society can influence the care delivered by the hospital. Patient characteristics, such as personality, can also influence the health care they receive.
2. Extroverted Ella and her four best friends–Agreeable Aliyah, Conscientious Cora, Neurotic Naiah, and Open Olivia–have all sought health care in recent months. Using two or three adjectives, briefly describe each woman’s personality based on her defining Big Five trait. Suggest how each woman might interact with health care providers and health care more generally based on her defining trait.
Example: Open Olivia–curious, adventurous, open to unusual ideas. Open to unorthodox medical practices, may be willing to try new procedures, and may be accepting of both Western and non-Western medical practices.
