- Craft a clear, arguable, one-sentence rough thesis statement that expresses your argumentative stance. The idea is to distill your argument (as it exists at this stage) into a single, comprehensive sentence. Readers should be able to pluck your thesis statement out of your essay and know both your topic and your stance. Don’t use first person (“I believe that…” or “I feel that…”). Use 3rd person – not 1st person “I” or 2nd person “you.” Avoid announcing what your essay will do in your thesis (example: “This essay will…”). A thesis statement is not a question.
